Dartmouth College

Hold Tight

Dartmouth College functions as a remembered place and a point of recognition between Mike and Anthony. Their shared connection explains how Mike identifies Anthony, gives the two men a language of mutual understanding, and reveals how Anthony’s education shaped his choices: football talent brought him to Dartmouth, while the prospect of a life beyond professional sports made the degree itself essential.

A shared history, not a campus setting

Dartmouth enters the narrative through conversation rather than a scene set at the college. Mike and Anthony’s connection is established when Mike points to the D tattoo on his arm and asks whether it refers to Dartmouth. Anthony confirms the association with a slow nod. The exchange turns an apparently small visual detail into evidence of a history they share: Mike recognizes a collegiate marker, and Anthony recognizes that Mike knows what it means.

The available details place both men in relation to Dartmouth, though the narrative gives more of Anthony’s educational history than Mike’s. Mike says that he liked the college a lot and identifies hockey as the sport he played. Anthony, by contrast, describes his football career, the scholarship that brought him there, and the degree he earned. The institution therefore joins the two men without making their experiences identical. Their sports differ, and the account of Anthony’s educational decisions is distinctly his own.

Motto and recognition

The college’s motto gives the connection a verbal form. Mike recites Vox clamantis in deserto, and Anthony supplies its translation, “A voice crying in the wilderness.” Anthony admits that he never quite understood the motto; Mike answers that he did not either. Their exchange makes the phrase less a polished statement of shared belief than a remembered piece of collegiate language whose meaning remains uncertain to both men. The acknowledgment itself matters: they can share the words and their uncertainty about them.

This recognition later helps explain how Mike finds Anthony after being assaulted. Mike searches online for recent photographs of Dartmouth’s football team, notes that Anthony graduated only the previous year, and locates his address through the alumni site. Anthony calls the method smart. The sequence makes Dartmouth more than a conversational association: its football records and alumni network provide the practical means for Mike to find him. The institution supplies a trail from a remembered connection to a present-day encounter.

Education and the choice beyond football

Anthony describes himself as a very good, perhaps great, football player. He had been recruited to Division 1A and could have gone to the Big Ten, but he judged that he was not good enough to become a professional. His decision to attend Dartmouth followed from that assessment. Without a likely professional career, he did not want to leave with no education or what he calls a joke diploma; Dartmouth offered a full ride and a liberal-arts degree.

The decision gives Anthony’s athletic ability a practical limit rather than allowing it to define his entire future. He does not dismiss football: recruitment and the possibility of playing in the Big Ten mark the level he reached. But he measures that possibility against what would follow if it did not become a career. The resulting choice preserves both the achievement of his athletic past and the value of an education he can retain regardless of whether professional sports are attainable.

Anthony says that, whatever else happens, he will always be an Ivy League graduate. When Mike points out that he is going to Columbia Law, Anthony confirms it. The exchange places the Dartmouth degree within a continuing educational trajectory. For Anthony, the credential is not merely a past distinction; it is part of a future that extends into law.

A connection with limits

Anthony remembers Dartmouth as a different world from the neighborhood where he now lives. No one in the neighborhood, he says, knew about the school. His recollection marks a divide between the place where he grew up or lives and the college experience he carries with him, without suggesting that the divide erased his ties to the neighborhood. Dartmouth gave him a setting apart from that local knowledge, as well as a degree and an enduring identity as an Ivy League graduate.

The alumni bond, however, does not amount to complete trust. When Mike points out that Anthony also recognized his son’s picture, Anthony puts on sunglasses and says their Big Green connection only goes so far. The gesture and the qualification set a boundary: shared education can open a conversation, but it does not oblige Anthony to disclose everything Mike wants to know. The encounter thus gives Dartmouth a double significance. It is a genuine link between the men, and it is a link whose reach Anthony explicitly limits.
